Pengkalan Kubor Election: Nomination Sept 13, Polling Sept 25

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- The Election Commission (EC) has set Sept 25 for the Pengkalan Kubor by-election, with nomination on Sept 13 and early voting on Sept 21.
EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said the 2013 Master Electoral Rolls, combined with the supplementary electoral rolls for the first quarter of 2014 which had been updated until Aug 20, 2014, would be used for the by-election.

Abdul Aziz said the nomination for the by-election candidate will take place at the Tumpat land and territory operation office while early voting will take place at Dewan Delima at the Tumpat district police headquarters.

The official vote tabulation centre will be at the Dewan Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato’ Biji Wangsa in Tumpat.

Abdul Aziz said a total of 11 schools which comprises 46 voting channels will be used as polling centres. He said the by-election is expected to cost about RM696,750.

Asked on the expected voter turnout for the by-election, Abdul Aziz said based on the Teluk Intan by-election in May, he expected a voter turnout of not more than 70%.

Abdul Aziz said the Pengkalan Kubor constituency had 24,039 voters, comprising 23,929 ordinary voters, 109 advance voters and an absentee or overseas voter.

The deadline for voters to submit applications as postal voters in the country is Sept 15 and Sept 13 for those abroad, he added.

He said the Operations Room at the Tumpat Land and District Office would be the nomination centre and the vote tallying centre would be at Dewan Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato’ Biji Wangsa, Tumpat.

The early voting centre would be Dewan Delima of the Tumpat Police District headquarters, reported Bernama.

“The estimated cost of holding this by-election is RM696,750 and three election campaign enforcement teams will be formed,” he added.

Voters can check their status by surfing the EC website at www.spr.gov.my or through the short messaging service (sms) by typing SPR<space>SEMAK<space>IC NO and sent to 15888 beginning Sept 8.

They can also call the Election Office at 03-88856565 or 09-7482510.

Responding to a question from the media, Abdul Aziz said as in the previous by-election, the indelible ink would be used.

On preparation in case of a flood in Tumpat, he said the EC was well prepared for it.

The seat fell vacant following the death of its three term assemblyman Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar from liver cancer on August 20 in China.

Noor Zahidi was also the Tumpat Umno division chairman for four terms. In the last general election, he beat Parti Keadilan Rakyat's Saharun Ibrahim and independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary with a 1,736 vote majority.
